so it is kind of obama's fault. of course, the simpler explanation is not that obama planned all this. but the reason they have been taking moderate positions they have taken for years now, those just may be the positions. if the republican party can't agree to them or come up with popular ideas of their own, the problem may be within the republican party, not at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. barack obama is the president of the united states. he is a very powerful man, responsible for many things. but he is not why most republicans have taken a pledge, saying they will never raise a dollar in taxes no matter what the budget deficit looks like. he is not why they decided to put the whole u.s. economy at risk if they don't get their way on spending cuts. he is not why the white house partnered with gun legislation, no matter how small, is tantamount to taking away guns, he is not why extreme movements like extreme ideas like going back to a gold standard in the middle of an economic crisis have taken root on the right. t

three years later mackey is back. he's changed his mind a little bit. >> technically speaking, it's more like fascism. socialism is where that government owns the means of production. in fascism the government doesn't own the means of production, but they do control it. and that's what's happening with the health care program and with these reforms. >> well, as you can imagine, whole foods' left-leaning customer base didn't take too kindly to that label either. mackey is already walking it back. >> i regret using that word now because it's got so much baggage attached to it from the middle of the 21st -- 20th century when you had germany and italy and spain that were fascist and people still associate that with it. of course i was just using the standard dictionary definition. >> merriam webster dictionary defines fascism as "a regime headed by a dictatorial leader that forcibly suppresses opposition." mackey, a self-professed libertarian, gets his definition from the ayn rand school of thought. listen, i believe mack

impeachment, before president obama had even suggested anything. steve stockman wanted to impeach him as a gun grabber. that, incidentally, is how he won his race to go back to congress this past year, too. he called his republican opponent in the primary a gun grabber. everybody's a gun grabber. president obama did introduce yesterday a very broad package of reforms to try to deal with gun violence in this country. expanded access to mental health treatment, improvements in the background checks system, resources for schools to have more armed guards on site if they want them. and yes, a renewal of the old assault weapons ban that we had for ten years before it expired in 2004. since president obama introduced those measures all of the discussion in washington has been about the viability of what he is proposing, right? renewing the assault weapons ban, that's not viable, that'll never pass. that is the chorus from washington. the nra of course says that nothing will pass. old steve stockman says i don't care if anything passes, let's impeach him

and i think obama has papered over that for the last four years. but i think that's going to change here in the next few years. the first issue where i think we'll see a conversation on this is the question of entitlements. there are some folks in the democratic party who are happy to have a conversation on issues like the eligibility age for medicare. other democrats like sherrod brown, the senator from ohio, i talked to, they say hell, no, we are not going to have a conversation about that. that is core to our dna, and we're not going to move on that. >> j-mart, last time republicans had an internal debate about a lot of these issues, a lot of folks divided the party. you mention smd moderaed some m coming over to the democratic party. do you see a contentious primaries in the future for the 2014 midterms? >> well, look. i don't think you're going to see the sort of club-for-growth-style conservative on moderate attacks that you see in the gop. i think you're going to see some of that. keep in mind, the primary story began '06 when joe lieberman
